New Wine In Old Wine Skins

 Mark 2:22 NIV

[22] And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”

This is a great principle, not only for the Church, but for life as well.

Jesus said this referring to the old law and the new covenant He was bringing. He meant here that the New Covenant of the Blood of Jesus, which we are under now, could never be contained in the Old Law, the Law of Moses. The old law was regulations to follow. The New Covenant is living under God's grace through our faith in the finished work of Jesus which saves us completely.

The main principle is that you cannot put new things into old things. The old things will destroy the new things. The Bible teaches this.

When you are born again, you are a new creation in Christ. So, it says renew your mind to that fact and do not return to your former way of living. You are new, so you cannot live in your old way of life. Your old life will not hold the new life you have now. You have to leave your old life behind and move forward with Jesus, following Jesus.

This ideal can be used in many ways. You are new in Christ, so put off old patterns of thinking, old patterns of speaking, reacting, behaving. You are new in Christ, so get rid of old dispositions, habits, etc. You may have to get rid of old friends because they are not good for your new life in Christ. You may have to find new interests, new hobbies, new ways of doing things because the old things do not fit who you are anymore. The old life cannot coexist with the new life you have in Jesus.

This principle is ideally seen in rehab programs for drug or alcohol addiction, and also in prison inmates reform.

All want a new life off drugs or alcohol or once they get out of prison. They aim to build a new life. So, extreme changes have to be made. They say change everything when they get out. Don't live in the old area they came from. Don't go back to the same friends. Don't go back to the same hangouts. Don't go back to the same actvities, hobbies, or interests. Don't go back to the same influences that started it all. They literally have to change everything to not return to those addictions or crimes.

Every aspect of their old life cannot coexist with the new life they are working towards. It will not work. The old wine skin cannot hold the new wine. See?

So whatever we want in life that is new to us, we have to leave the old things behind that cannot coexist with the new things we are working towards.

Whatever we face, remember God is with us and the Holy Spirit is inside us to give us strength. We don't have to do anything all by ourselves or in our own strength.

Literally "out with the old, in with the new."
