Staying in the same vein of thought from yesterday, about old or new wine, old or new wineskins, Jesus ends this teaching with this sentence:
Luke 5:39 NIV
[39] And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’ ”
Here Jesus was talking about bringing His new covenant into the world, the "new wine."
The Pharisees and teachers of the law did not want the "new wine" or new covenant. They wanted the "old wine," the old law of Moses and their old traditions. Why? It was their comfort zone. It was what they had spent years studying and learning. All their traditions came from it. It was all they knew. It was familiar. It was comfortable. It was what they identified with. It was their warm cozy blanket in religion.
They rejected Jesus and His signs, miracles, and teachings to stay in their comfort zone. To them the "old was better."
Don't people do that today? They cling to their old habits, their old personalities, their old traditions, their old way of living their everyday lives because they think that's better than following Jesus?
It's comfortable, it's familiar, it's how they have always done things. It's who they are. Some will even justify their lives with statements such as, "That's just who I am," or "I've always been this way," or "I guess that's just how I was made."
Why? They have been deceived by the devil into believing that is who they are and they can never change. Some are so deceived that they don't feel like they need to follow Jesus, they're fine just the way they are. They've believed the devil's lies. It's comfortable, it's familiar, it's who they are.
What's the point? Don't reject Jesus like they did just to stay in your old patterns, behaviors, or traditions, just to stay in your comfort zone.
Come to Jesus! Start a new life following Him!
If you are already a Christian, don't hold onto things in your life that keep you from becoming all that God created you to be (Heb.12:1). Don't stay in the familiar. Don't get comfortable. Let go.
The old is NOT better. Cling to Jesus. The Holy Spirit will change you from the inside out. Live a new life following Jesus!!
