Everywhere on earth plants, trees, bushes etc. all bear some sort of fruit. That's how we know what kind of plant or tree it is. Some plants are named for the fruit they bear such as a grapevine.
Mankind was also made to bear fruit. Fruit for God. The Holy Spirit bears fruit through us which are the "Fruits of the Spirit." Fruit that lasts forever.
Galatians 5:22-23a. NIV
[22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness and self-control...
When we are born again, added to the spiritual family of God, the Holy Spirit comes and lives inside us.
Ephesians 1:13 NIV [13] And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,
Now, He can bear His fruit through us, the fruits of the Spirit. We don't do it all by ourselves. It all doesn't rest on our shoulders. He produces these fruits within us.
Why?
To keep it all to ourselves? To live an isolated life away from physical people? To live at a distance from physical people, interacting only by text, phone, or social media? No. To give these fruits away for someone else to enjoy and benefit from.
Giving love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control away to those in our lives.
We are not meant to keep this fruit all to ourselves. It is made to go out into the world and be eaten by those around us. Bringing all these good things into people's lives.
An apple tree doesn't make apples for itself to eat. The apple tree does not benefit from the fruit it makes. It is made to be eaten by someone else who might come along. Those outside the tree benefit from its fruit. The apple tree isn't selfish or greedy, hoarding its fruit for itself. We shouldn't either.
Our fruit is made by the Holy Spirit to benefit those around us, in our area of influence. So let's pursue doing good to those around us. Display our fruit so people can eat it. Don't live selfish, self-centered lives. That doesn't help anybody.
Seek the good of others. Reach out to others.
1 Corinthians 10:24 NIV [24] No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.
