In American society, when a person meets somebody, the most common question is, "What do you do?" This allows someone to immediately see where a person is in life, categorize them, and put them in a neat little box. This is one of the cultural things that people do. This is not cool at all. This allows people to accept or dismiss a person solely on surface information.
As a Christian, when I meet someone, I never ask that question. It never crosses my mind. I just visit with the person because I don't have to know what they do to strike up a conversation.
Romans 12:2 says, "do not conform to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
"What do you do?" is just a cultural pattern that has been adopted into our society. People just ask that as a normal way of meeting someone. We need to lay that aside and not worry about it.
What someone does is not who they are. People try to make it that way though, such as saying, "I am a truck driver," versus "I drive a truck." We all do this naturally because the way we grew up. However, this mentality has to change. We have to separate our occupation from our own identity.
People mistreat, judge, accept, or dismiss others based on that tiny little question of "what do you do?"
Who cares what they do initially? We should love all people and treat all people the same way, no matter what their occupation is.
Let's decide to love all people no matter what they do for a living. Because what you do is not who you are.
