I was driving home from work this morning on the interstate and I was driving the posted speed limit. Cars were passing me like I was sitting still. They drove as fast as everyone else who was passing me. It occurred to me that this was a great example of how people live life on this planet. Everyone does what everyone else is doing.
A lot of times, due to no fault of anyone in particular, people go through life doing what everyone else is doing. They do by nature what everybody else does. Whether good or bad, people adapt to their surroundings, their cultures, or local traditions. It all happens easily and effortlessly. This is what Jesus said was the "broad path that leads to destruction." It is destructive because people don't know they're on it. They just do what everyone else is doing.
Matthew 7:13-14 NIV [13] “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. [14] But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
As Christians, Jesus wants us to walk the narrow road that leads to life. Why? What's the point? Why does it matter how we live our lives?
Because countless millions of people are on the broad path and have not been saved yet. People die everyday, eternally separated from God because they just didn't know any better.
Our lives and how we live them matter because Jesus uses us to lead people to Him. You might say, "Oh I could never do that." Yet we all do it everyday by how we live our lives. We influence those around us everyday whether we want to or not.
Jesus works through the Church so others can be saved. God makes His appeal to the world through us as we are Christ's ambassadors or representatives. He uses us to reach those who are not saved yet.
2 Corinthians 5:20 NIV [20] We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.
That's why Paul tells us in Romans 12:2 "do not conform to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Don't just blindly do what everyone else does because God is trying to use our lives and actions for other people to be saved too.
If that's so, then how does He do this through us? He "bears fruit" in our lives by the promptings of the Holy Spirit who is inside us. He does this through our love and good deeds. We are the "light of the world" by our love and good deeds. He saved us so that we could influence others by love and good deeds.
Matthew 5:14-16 NIV [14] “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. [15] Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. [16] In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Ephesians 2:10 NIV [10] For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
If we act and live like everyone else, which is predominantly selfish, then God will not be able to use us so others can be saved.
So, what's the point? Why not do what everyone else does? Because God wants to use our influence of love and good deeds for other people to be saved. He wants everyone to go to heaven.
