Hi dear readers,
In the early morning hours of Christmas Day, I want to jump right into a passage that is chock full of information on how to live our everyday lives. I want to preface it with another passage in Hebrews.
Hebrews 12:1 NIV
[1] Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,
As Christians, we run this race of life. The writer of Hebrews says to get rid of everything that weighs our spirits down, or drags us down. Also, get rid of sin that we all can get tangled up in. This is different for everyone. What drags you down? What sin has snared you or what sin has woven its way into your life? We are told here to examine our lives and get rid of it once and for all. Why? Because it interrupts or distracts us from our walk with God. Also, we represent Jesus on this Earth. God uses us to draw people to Jesus. If we're wrapped up in all that mess, then He can't use us to save others.
So to begin, let's consider getting rid of all the junk in our lives. (NOTE: We cannot do this in our own power, but must rely on the power of the Holy Spirit inside us to get rid of these things.)
Now, lets look at Romans 12 to glean all the tid bits of information we can use everyday!!
Romans 12:1 NIV
[1] Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
How can we be "living sacrifices" that are holy and pleasing to God? By getting rid of things that drag us down and getting rid of sin that's worked its way into our lives. This is a process, so settle in and be patient as the Holy Spirit works in us to make all this junk go away.
Next,
Romans 12:2 NIV
[2] Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Do not do what everyone else does. Do not think or act like everyone else. You are unique, made by God for His purpose. You were made with individual characteristics and traits. Strengths and talents. Use what you have to serve God by serving other people. Do not conform to what everyone else is doing or how everyone else thinks. We are children of God, the Body of Christ; His Church. We are representatives of Jesus Christ. Live to be who Jesus wants you to be, forget the rest of it. This will help us to not get dragged down in life. This will prevent us from engaging in the sins that everyone else commits. This will help us in our everyday lives.
Okay next:
Romans 12:3-8 NIV
[3] For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. [4] For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, [5] so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. [6] We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; [7] if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; [8] if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
This says for us not to be arrogant or conceited. Don't think more highly of yourself than you ought to. Rather, think about who you really are in Christ. Think about the talents and gifts you received from God, and then be content with who you are. (NOTE: No comparison with others. Never do that!) Use your gifts. Because within the Body of Christ, people have been given all kinds of gifts and all of us are needed with the gifts God has given us. So everyone is needed and everyone is important. Therefore, there is no room for arrogance and conceit in the Church. We are all needed. We are all important. Work this mentality into your everyday lives.
The next section is awesome for how to treat people in the Church and out in the world. A lot of these specifics can be summed up in Romans 13:10. (NOTE: So funny how people tend to focus on what they cannot do anymore as Christians. This section focuses on what we CAN DO in our everyday lives.) This last section speaks for itself. It's so good!!
Romans 12:9-20 NIV
[9] Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
[10] Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.
[11] Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.
[12] Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
[13] Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
[14] Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
[15] Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
[16] Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
[17] Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.
[18] If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
[19] Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. [20] On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”
See? So good. Add these specifics to our everyday lives and this will change our lives for good.
And finally,
Romans 12:21 NIV
[21] Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Always overcome evil with good.
Why?
We are the Church. We represent Jesus.
Why?
So others will be saved too.
